Hardship Emergency Support and Referral
Program provides immediate help in crisis and gives direction to promote self-sufficiency. Assistance may include referral to other SOS programs and/or other community groups, agencies and/or organizations. (Since 1968)
Meals-On-Wheels
SOS Meals On Wheels program assists people in maintaining their independence by providing hot, nutritious, meals at a reasonable cost. SOS volunteers deliver meals three times a week to an average of 50 residents per month. Meals are prepared at Eagle Park Health Care Facility in Qualicum Beach. Partially funded by Vancouver Island Health Authority. We welcome clients assisted by Veterans Affairs Canada. (Since 1973)
Medical Transportation
Volunteer drivers transport residents to medical appointments. (Since 1968)
Income Tax Returns
This program works in conjunction with Revenue Canada Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). A Revenue Canada Representative provides up-to-date training and support to SOS Volunteers to help them complete your income tax and benefit return. SOS volunteers are only trained to file basic income tax returns. They do not complete complex returns for individuals nor do they complete self-employment returns. (Since 1980)
INCOME GUIDELINES TO QUALIFY:
Single: $25,000.00/year. Married: Combined total income of 30,000.00 or less.
Caring for Kids at Christmas
Bringing our community together at Christmas to help those in need. The 2006 Christmas Program assisted 1,670 adults & children. (Since 1968)
Child, Youth and Family Recreation Fund
Financial support for children, youth, and families who wish to take part in sport and recreational activities. (Since 1972)
Haven Home
Providing safety for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. Contracted through the Ministry of Community, Aboriginal, and Women's Services. Volunteers help staff a 24-hour telephone line. Program also provides advocacy, information and referrals as it relates to individual woman's circumstances. (Since 1981)
Contracted Youth Community Court Ordered Program
Youth Probation Office refers young offenders to SOS staff who places and supervises the completion of court ordered community work service. This contracted program is funded by the Ministry of Children & Family Development. (Since 1983)
The Youth Employment Skills Link program (YESL)
is provided in partnership with the Government of Canada. Ten youth participate in a 22-week program of client supports, employability skills, personal development skills and work experience, which will facilitate their transition to the labour market. Participants will be paid a weekly stipend to assist with living expenses and minimum wage for the duration of the work experience. The youth will be provided with:
- Provision of information, direction, and assistance with specific career goals and how to achieve them, i.e. tailored interventions based on the specific needs of the individual
- Meaningful work experience
- Increased skill level and sense of purpose for youth
- Adult mentorship
- Healthy lifestyle alternatives
- Access to education/employment opportunities and programs
